The flowers are one of the expressions of personality at a wedding, and become a very important part of the day. Throughout history herbs and flowers have always been a part of wedding ceremonies. As time progressed the garlands worn became carried, and seasonal flowers were often the best and cheapest way to make special decorations. Now the beauty and scent of flowers is an integral part of getting married, and the costs can be very large. In fact a wedding date can be determined by a favorite flower being in season.

Here are some of the most popular wedding flowers requested by brides to be in New York in 2005:

1. Peonies
2. Tulips
3. Garden Roses
4. Calla Lilies
5. Orchids
6. Ranunculi
7. Hydrangea
8. Gardenias
9. Dahlias
10. Flowering branches

So how does that compare to 2007? Well, for one, people want pesticide free, organically raised flowers as the trend toward ”green” weddings grow. But the list itself hasn”t changed that much. Perhaps the order.

The biggest constant in 2007 flowers was individual style. Brides knew exactly how they wanted to express their personality. Couples were tending more to pay for their own weddings, with the emphasis on environmental issues, uniques places, and flowers that have special meaning to them. Flowers in the hair also made a resurgence in popularity for simplistic beauty and a way to save money. Some even ventured into growing their own flowers for the occasion.

One of the more exotic picks for 2007 was the Bird of Paradise bloom. Long stemmed single flowers like Lilies, Orchids and Iris were used to make a statement in a simple but majestic way. Again, this is an example of the bride expressing her individuality and using flowers to do so.

Table centerpieces are still the first choice as flowers, but silk ones instead for fresh seems to be a popular. As centerpieces were increasingly being used to give away to certain people, having silk flowers was a nice touch. Many brides chose to have fresh flower bouquets, and altar flowers, and substitute good quality silk flowers in other areas to save money and wastage.

It isn”t all about the type of flower either. The type and style of bouquets is very important. Each person wants something to suit the day, formal, casual, or somewhere in between. From cascading arrangements to a single bloom, the bouquet speaks volumes about the bride and groom. Certainly lavish silk arrangements are popular here. The fact they can keep forever and do not have the weight issue of fresh flowers, combines with the price factor. But for most nothing can beat the look and scent of real flowers.

But ”green” weddings are certainly the growing trend. So we can expect to see brides choosing silk, home grown, or more simple flowers to complete their day. A few have even taken to offering potted flowering plants as centerpieces to offer to guests. So really the only limits are imaginations, and is seems there are no limits to some.
